Musician jailed after gig goes bad

A dispute over money for a funk and soul show ended last week with a traveling musician jailed in Roanoke.

Darryl Nathaniel Jenkins, 49, who uses the stage name Darryl Ray, was charged early Friday morning with robbery by violence after an incident at Martin's Downtown Bar & Grill.

Jason Edwards, a bartender at Martin's Downtown, said that Jenkins placed a steak knife against his throat just after midnight Friday and demanded $400 for the Darryl Ray Band performance.

By that time, the club was willing to pay only $200 for the show. Club owner Jason Martin said that he had a word-of-mouth agreement with Jenkins to pay him $100 per band member -- or $400 for four musicians. But singer/saxophonist Jenkins brought only a guitarist, plus electronic equipment to cover the bass and drum parts, Martin said. Martin left Edwards with instructions about how to pay Jenkins.

"I told him he showed up with half a band, and so he was only going to get half the money," Edwards said Tuesday.

Jenkins walked outside for a couple of minutes, then returned, demanding $400, Edwards said. Edwards attempted to call Martin.

"I thought I'd call and see if we could give him the money," Edwards said. "He was pretty angry. Then he took the cellphone out of my hand and threw it across the restaurant. He held the knife to my neck. I gave him the money." By the time police arrested Jenkins at the Sheetz on Williamson Road and Orange Avenue, he was down to $391, which was returned to the bar, Edwards said.

The Philadelphia-based musician has a bail hearing scheduled for Nov. 30.

Jenkins had apparently forgotten he had to play at Martin's Downtown that night, according to his agent/manager/fiancee, Constance Grimes. When Grimes reminded him, he was able to find one other player to join him, but he had to bring the electronic gear to fill out the sound, she said. Jenkins considered canceling the show, but he had arrived late the last time he played a Thursday at Martin's Downtown, and he didn't want to risk losing future shows there, she said.

"He was trying to pull it together at the last minute," Grimes said. "He did not want to not show up this time, because he felt that if he did not show up, that would be it for him at this venue. But it didn't matter, because no one was there" to see the show.

Grimes said that there had been no discussion with Martin's Downtown about payment based on the number of band members.

Halfway through the show, the bartender told Jenkins that he would not be getting the full $400.

"And Darryl went off," said Grimes, who was not at the show.

The Darryl Ray Band has played several Roanoke venues over at least the past two years. Roanoke musician/songwriter Chris Shepard has played with Jenkins several times.

"I consider Darryl Ray not only a great musician, showman and songwriter, but also a friend," Shepard wrote in an e-mail. "He is a stand-up guy, a loyal supporter of his friends and will always get your back."

Jenkins was scheduled to play in December at Awful Arthur's locations in Blacksburg and Salem, according to the Darryl Ray Band's MySpace page.

The most recent comment on that page was from Martin's Downtown, dated Nov. 1: "Looking forward to tonight!!!!"
