Man charged in killing at Wal-Mart
Rodney Gene Startz of Radford was taken into custody after a seven-hour standoff with police and charged with first-degree murder.
RADFORD -- A 45-year-old man, wanted in connection with a fatal shooting at a Wal-Mart, was arrested Saturday night after a seven-hour standoff with police at a residence on Radford's west side, the Pulaski County sheriff announced.
Police charged Rodney Gene Startz with first-degree murder in connection with an earlier shooting at a Wal-Mart in Fairlawn that left one female employee dead, said Pulaski County Sheriff Jim Davis.
The shooting occurred about 3:30 p.m. when police said Startz walked into the store with a handgun and shot 46-year-old Donna Jean Angelo of Pulaski County.
The Wal-Mart was quickly evacuated and closed for the night, said Amy Campbell, a company spokeswoman at the Wal-Mart headquarters in Arkansas. Campbell did not know when the Fairlawn Wal-Mart would reopen.
Angelo was taken to Carilion New River Valley Medical Center and then airlifted to a Roanoke hospital where she died of a gunshot wound, police said.
After the shooting, Startz fled to his home at Ingles and Roberts streets where he barricaded himself inside with firearms and threatened to kill himself, police said.
The standoff began about 4 p.m., at which time negotiators were able to establish contact with Startz. Six residents who lived nearby were evacuated, police said.
About 11 p.m., Startz surrendered and was taken into custody.
The Radford Police Department and Virginia State Police assisted the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office in the apprehension.
