Man sentenced in child porn case
A Roanoke judge sentenced a Hopewell man to 10 years in prison Wednesday for attempting to arrange a sexual liaison with someone he thought was a 13-year-old and for possessing child pornography.
Judge Charlie Dorsey told George Alexander Porter that, had "Kira_Kicks_1990" been a real 13-year-old, he believed Porter would have followed through on his intention to have sex with her.
"I don't think anything would have stopped you and I don't think you would have stopped," Dorsey said.
Porter, 47, pleaded guilty in September to five felonies. Because Porter has no previous criminal record, the state sentencing guidelines recommended a maximum punishment of 3 months in jail. Dorsey instead sentenced Porter to 25 years, suspended after he serves 10.
Roanoke police were tipped off about Porter last year by Perverted Justice, a controversial citizens' group that says it targets men who try to solicit sex from underage girls on the Internet. Roanoke police took over, and Porter was arrested Jan. 15 when he came to Roanoke to meet the pretend 13-year-old.
Porter testified at the sentencing, saying he was addicted to the Internet and to pornography. "I absolutely believe I have a problem," he said.
Porter's counsel, Richmond lawyer James Maloney, argued that Porter should receive continued therapy rather than prison time. He said that Perverted Justice and police actively encouraged Porter to continue the relationship, while Porter struggled with the morality of the situation.
Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Patrick Kenney countered that Porter's only concern was getting caught. For example, investigators found a "false screen" on Porter's computer that hid the real contents, which included child pornography.
