Missing man's body found in river sweep

A rescue team on Friday found the body of a man who went missing Wednesday night in an Alleghany County river, an official said.

Thomas Andrew Camp, 28, of Augusta County was seen Wednesday walking along bluffs near the Cowpasture River, said Alleghany County Sheriff Dale Muterspaugh.

Later, two boys riding bicycles near the river, about six miles east of Clifton Forge, saw Camp in the river moving his arms against the current, Muterspaugh said. The boys went home and told their parents, who called authorities.

Rescue teams from several locations scoured the river for more than four hours Thursday night before calling off the search because of dangerous conditions, Muterspaugh said.

The Buena Vista Fire Department Swift Water Rescue Team found Camp's body Friday morning about 9:20, 15 minutes after the search had resumed.

Officials aren't sure how Camp came to be in the river, but Muterspaugh said his death is not suspicious.

Camp's body was taken to the state medical examiner's office in Roanoke for an autopsy.
