Fire damages apartments in Salem

A fire caused extensive damage to an apartment building in the 600 block of East Main Street in Salem on Sunday morning, according to Capt. John Prillaman of the Salem Fire & EMS Department. No one was injured in the blaze.

The fire started in a first-floor apartment and spread throughout the two-story structure, Prillaman said. Three of the four apartments were occupied and all five residents that were present escaped without injury.

The fire has been ruled accidental and an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause, Prillaman said. Damage to the building was estimated at $160,000.

About 30 personnel from the Salem Fire and EMS Department, Salem Rescue Squad and the Roanoke Fire-EMS Department responded to the call at 1:30 a.m. They began arriving four minutes after receiving the call and found heavy fire and smoke coming from one of the apartments, Prillaman said.

Residents of the building were relocated to hotel rooms provided by the American Red Cross, Prillaman said.
