County to request drought status
The Bedford County Board of Supervisors agreed Monday to ask the governor to declare Bedford County a drought area.
Dry conditions in the county have caused widespread crop and grass damage, according to the resolution the board approved.
The resolution is the first step toward making sure Bedford County farmers hurt by the lack of rain will be eligible if low-interest loans or other supplemental relief is made available by the federal government.
The board took an unexpected recess last night after a deputy fainted during the meeting. They resumed after rescue personnel arrived to take her to the hospital.
Christian Stoneman was in good condition Monday night at Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital, said hospital spokesman Eric Earnhart.
