Adrianna Sgarlata, Miss Arlington, is overcome with emotion while being crowned Miss Virginia 2006 by last year's winner Kristi Glakas.

There was a drumroll and tears, then pink roses and a crown.

Adrianna Sgarlata, who woke up Saturday morning as Miss Arlington, would go to bed as Miss Virginia (if, in fact, she could sleep at all).

In between, the George Mason graduate student wore a hot pink bikini, crossed the stage in a navy gown and answered an onstage question about bullying to edge 19 other hopefuls from around the state.

Kristi Glakas, Miss Virginia 2005, crowned the new winner. It was Sgarlata's third appearance in the state pageant.

For the talent competition, the Fairfax County native sang a Puccini aria, filling the Roanoke Performing Arts Theatre with her powerful soprano. Sgarlata had collected a preliminary award for the same song Friday.

Along with the crown, Sgarlata won a year's worth of cosmetics, a year's lease to a Roanoke apartment and a car, which she'll drive around the state to promote tolerance and make paid appearances.

Miss Greater Richmond, Lauren Collier, was the pageant's first runner-up, followed by Miss Greater Springfield Scholarship Pageant, Caressa Cameron. The third runner-up was Miss Hampton-Newport News, Leigh-Taylor Smith, and the fourth runner-up was Miss Lynchburg, Amanda Evans.

Sgarlata will represent Virginia in the Miss America pageant.
