Suspense is building in Miss Va. pageant

Two contestants received preliminary awards in the pageant's second night, which featured swimsuits, a smoke machine and a little taste of tiger print.

"Who is our next Miss Virginia?"

The question was posed to the audience several times as the pageant continued in Roanoke on Friday night, and was answered by girlish shrieking, but not from the judges.

Instead -- after another round of swimsuits, light use of a smoke machine and at least one contestant appearing in a tiger-print bodysuit -- two more hopefuls received preliminary awards.

For her turn in a pink bikini, Miss Greater Richmond, Lauren Collier, won the night's swimsuit award. And with a powerful soprano, which she applied to a Puccini aria, Miss Arlington, Adrianna Sgarlata, took the talent award.

Kristi Glakas, the reigning Miss Virginia, escorted the two down the runway -- a runway, one emcee noted, "that may lead to Miss America."

The pageant concludes at the Roanoke Performing Arts Theatre tonight, when the pool of 20 contestants is narrowed to 10, and Glakas passes her crown to the winner.

In its second night, the pageant reprised a few song and dance numbers from its first segment, but offered some more adventurous talent performances.

Miss Greater Franklin County, Michelle Cundiff, performed a monologue from "I Love Lucy," and Miss Chesterfield, Erika Uhlig, tore into an electric violin.
