Police in New York City charged three Roanoke Valley teenagers after they were caught throwing cans of paint off the roof of a hotel, New York police said.

Police said Tyler Moore, 18, Sean McGhee, 18, both Cave Spring High School students, and a 17-year-old girl threw seven paint cans off the roof of the Doubletree Metropolitan Hotel at 569 Lexington Ave. in Manhattan about 5 a.m. Sunday.

The cans struck an officer from the 17th Precinct station, which is across from the hotel, police said. The officer was treated for an injury to the left eye and released from a local hospital, police said. The cans also damaged two police vehicles, three police scooters and an officer's personal vehicle, police said.

The three, who were visiting New York as part of a high school field trip, were charged with reckless endangerment, assault with intent to cause physical injury with a weapon, criminal mischief and criminal trespass.
