Garbage truck repairs to come from Roanoke County budget

Roanoke County must spend about $8,000 to fix the garbage truck windows and mirrors that were attacked by vandals this month.

The estimate is similar to what General Services Director Anne Marie Green had expected when damage to the 15 trucks was discovered Jan. 10 at a county facility on Kessler Mill Road in Salem, disrupting county trash collection that day.

The county will pay for the expense out of its 2011-12 general services budget.

Police have no leads on a suspect, Green said.

The incident likely isn't related to Franklin County school buses that received a window bashing on Christmas Day, according to Green and Steve Oakes, director of transportation and facilities for Franklin County Public Schools.

In that case, a person smashed windows on six vans and stole tools from them. Someone also stole copper from two heat pumps, an indoor piece of a pump and an ice maker, he said.

The person was caught on video camera, Oakes said, and Rocky Mount police continue to investigate.

Oakes said the heat pump damage and stolen items cost $8,900 to replace and the broken windows cost $2,300. Insurance reimbursements may pay for most of the damage, he said.
