The Botetourt County Sheriff's Office and the mayor of the town of Buchanan confirmed Wednesday that longtime town treasurer Wanda Smith is under investigation by both the sheriff's office and the Virginia State Police.

Mayor Tom Middlecamp said Smith was fired Jan. 16. He said she had been town treasurer for nearly 30 years.

Middlecamp said the investigation began after he contacted authorities with concerns about missing town funds.

Citing the ongoing investigation, neither he nor sheriff's Maj. Delbert Dudding would comment further.

Dudding said no charges have been filed to date.

Smith could not be reached for comment.
