Sex offender accused of being at Bedford County school
A convicted sex offender faces a felony charge in Bedford County after allegedly showing up at Stewartsville Elementary School.
A grand jury on Tuesday indicted Terry Wayne Kirk, 41, of Bedford County, on a single count of entering school property as a sex offender. Kirk is listed in the Virginia State Police's sex offender registry, where he is also listed as violent.
Kirk was convicted of forcible sodomy in Newport News in 1992.
Bedford County Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Wes Nance said Kirk was in a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle, sitting in the entry road at Stewartsville Elementary on April 29, when he began revving his engine. A passing county deputy who thought the Chevelle might be preparing to "spin out" spoke to Kirk and, noticing his nervousness, checked the police computer system, Nance said. The check revealed that Kirk was a registered sex offender forbidden from being on school property.
The charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
