Truck in police chase hits parked police car

Roanoke police haven't identified the driver of the pickup truck.

It was close to 2 a.m. Saturday, and Gay Bennett had just drifted off to sleep when a pickup truck being chased by Roanoke police slammed into her house.

"I had just got in a good sleep when I felt this awful jolt," Bennett said later Saturday. "It hit hard enough to knock the clock off the wall."

Looking outside, Bennett said she saw that the pickup truck had hit the take-home patrol car driven by her son, a Roanoke police officer, parked out front. It then took out a shrub before coming to a stop at the base of the house in the 100 block of Sycamore Avenue Northeast.

Although damage to the house was minimal, both the pickup truck and the police car fared much worse, Bennett said.

The driver of the pickup, who police have yet to identify, was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. His condition was not released by authorities.

No charges have been filed, although police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said alcohol is believed to be involved.

The incident began about 1:37 a.m. Saturday when police got a report of a hit-and-run driver who struck a utility pole at 10th Street and Williamson Road, snapping the pole in half and knocking out electricity to the area.

Just a minute or two later, a police officer spotted the vehicle in the 1500 block of Williamson Road and followed it to the intersection with Orange Avenue. There, the pickup sped off when the officer attempted a traffic stop.

Police pursued the vehicle as it turned west on Orange Avenue and then onto Courtland Road, a distance of just a few blocks. It was unclear Saturday what speeds the pursuit reached.

The driver lost control at Courtland and Sycamore, slamming into the police car that was parked in front of Bennett's house.

Bennett said her son was working a second job at the time.
