This tractor-trailer accident shut down part of Interstate 81 near Buchanan on Wednesday. The driver was charged, police said.

A tractor-trailer tumbled on an Interstate 81 ramp near Buchanan on Wednesday afternoon, spilling the 31,000 pounds of steel it was carrying onto the highway, police said. No one was seriously injured.

The southbound lanes of I-81 were closed from Exit 162 to Exit 156 from about 4:30 until 7 p.m., and one lane was closed until about 8:40 p.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation reported. Traffic was backed up for 5 miles and was rerouted onto U.S. 11.

A driver from Dallas-based American Bestway Transportation was maneuvering a 2008 International Tractor too quickly on the bridge and ramp between U.S. 11 and the interstate, Virginia State Police Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said.

The driver, William Grandberry, 44, of a Dallas suburb, was charged with failure to maintain control of the vehicle, Carpentieri said.
