Henry Co. says 31 people arrested in multiagency drug investigation

Police in Martinsville and Henry County revealed a two-year drug investigation after they arrested 31 people Thursday on charges from growing marijuana to selling cocaine.

The suspects, as young as 21 and as old as 63, were found in Axton, Bassett, Collinsville, Fieldale, Horsepasture, Martinsville and Ridgeway, said Henry County Sheriff Lane Perry in a news release. They were issued 59 felony and two misdemeanor charges.

Authorities bought drugs undercover, interdicted mail, stopped vehicles and searched homes, Perry said. They bought or seized narcotics such as cocaine, ranging from 0.4 grams, worth $40, to 1 ounce, worth $1,100; marijuana, ranging from 0.4 grams, worth $5, to 18 pounds, worth $18,000; and 6.87 grams of methamphetamine, worth $475.

The investigation was a collaboration among the sheriff's office, the Virginia State Police, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Martinsville Police Department and the U.S. Postal Service.

The indictments were sealed because 13 people are being sought on an additional 22 felony charges and one misdemeanor, Perry said.

Charges for the suspects who were arrested include: 20 felony counts of distribution of cocaine; one felony count of distribution of methamphetamine; 19 felony counts of distribution of marijuana; seven felony counts of manufacture marijuana; one felony count of possession of a firearm while in possession of cocaine; and one felony count of obtaining a prescription by false pretenses.
