A Roanoke grand jury this week indicted a second man in the city's first homicide of 2010.

Trent Rashad Jones, 21, of Roanoke is charged with murder and criminal use of a firearm in connection with the Jan. 1 killing of Charles Carver Gardner II.

Jones had already been charged with burglary in the case.

Timothy Jose Rhea, 34, of Roanoke also has been charged with murder, use of a firearm and burglary in the case, and Eric Jerome Jones, 20, and Kenneth J. Stone Jr., 22, both also of Roanoke, have been charged with burglary.

Police say Gardner was giving friends a ride home after New Year's Eve celebrations and walked in on a burglary.

The grand jury also returned indictments tied to two November fires. Corey Brian Hite of Ivanhoe, a former PetSmart employee who is accused of setting a fire that heavily damaged the Valley View store, was indicted on a charge of destroying property.

Glen Ivan Carter was indicted on a charge of burning property or destroying it by explosives in connection with a Nov. 21 blaze in the 1100 block of 12th Street Southeast. One person was hospitalized for smoke inhalation after the fire.
