Henry Co. deputy charged with perjury

State police arrested a deputy and a former deputy from the Henry County Sheriff's Office on charges of lying under oath Thursday, authorities said.

Deputy Glenn Brett Stokes, 39, of Martinsville, and former Deputy Mary Lois Markland, 58, of Ridgeway, were each charged with one count of perjury, according to Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Rob Carpentieri.

Authorities did not immediately release details on the nature of the charges. Buena Vista Commonwealth's Attorney Chris Russell was appointed as special prosecutor in the case, Carpentieri said.

Stokes was released on a $500 unsecured bond and was suspended without pay, pending trial, the sheriff's office said in a statement. Markland was not being held on Thursday night at the Henry County Jail, a deputy at the jail said.
