Roanoke elementary school principal sentenced for DUI

The principal of Roanoke's Fallon Park Elementary School has received the mandatory minimum sentence for a first offense for driving under the influence.

Cynthia Delp, an award-winning teacher and principal, pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor in Roanoke County General District Court on Wednesday.

Chief Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Marian Kelley said Delp's driver's license was suspended for one year, except to drive to work as well as Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program meetings and for medical reasons.

Delp also has to pay a $250 fine, $171 in court costs and received a 90-day suspended sentence. She'll have to serve eight hours of community service, Kelley said.

An additional charge of refusing to take a breath or blood test was taken under advisement by the court.

Delp, 39, was arrested about 7 p.m. Nov. 28, 2009, after a traffic accident near Tanglewood Mall.

She became principal of the Southeast Roanoke school in 2004, previously serving as an administrator in schools in Giles and Patrick counties.

She received the 2005 Outstanding Principal Award from the Curry School of Education Foundation at the University of Virginia. Last March, a California-based research group named Fallon Park one of the best urban schools in the country. At that time, Rita Bishop, Roanoke schools superintendent, called Delp a "masterful principal."

Delp continues to serve as principal of the school, according to school system spokeswoman Tiffany Woods.
