2 Franklin County robberies investigated

Authorities are not saying if they think the crimes, which took place days apart, are related.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is investigating two recent robberies.

One occurred Friday at the M&L Mart on Henry Road. The store's clerk said two black men demanded money and that the clerk get on the floor. Both men were wearing masks and one had a semiautomatic handgun, according to a release from the sheriff's office.

One man is described as light-skinned, 6 feet tall and wearing a dark jacket with a hood and gloves.

The second man is described as approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, and he was also wearing a jacket with a hood and gloves.

Another robbery took place Dec. 8 at Windy Gap Market on Jubal Early Highway in Hardy. A clerk in the store reported two black males entered the store and demanded cash. One had a handgun and both wore flannel shirts and hoods, masks and gloves.

The two fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, personal checks and a customer's Social Security check.

One man was described as 6 feet 1 inch tall and about 200 pounds. The second man was described as between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall.

The witness believed both men were in their early to mid-20s.

Lt. Steve McGuire, head of investigations with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, said evidence is being gathered and he is not prepared to say if the two robberies are related.
