Former state candidate loses home in fire

A recent state House candidate in Botetourt County lost his home in a weekend fire.

Will Smith's home in the 2600 block of Cedar Lane in Buchanan caught fire Saturday night, said Billy Joe Carter, chief of the Buchan- an Volunteer Fire Department.

It took firefighters from three stations nearly four hours to get the blaze under control, he said.

Investigators believe the fire started in the chimney and spread through the attic, Carter said.

The Roanoke Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross was called to help Smith's family, which includes his wife and three children.

Smith, who ran as the Constitution Party candidate, lost to incumbent 19th District Del. Lacey Putney, I-Bedford.

The 19th District includes parts of Botetourt and Bedford counties.
