A crowd made up of young fans of pop duo New Boyz is shepherded away Monday from the entrance of Red Clay Restaurant, where the stars were performing.

When two Los Angeles-based 18-year-old rappers who have girls swooning over an album called "Skinny Jeanz & a Mic" rolled up to a downtown Roanoke restaurant Monday night, the streets flooded with teenagers looking to see the stars.

And when hundreds of people clustered outside Red Clay on Campbell Avenue, unable to get in the $5 donation show, police officers herded the crowd off the roadways. But the fans weren't ready to pack it in.

One male who officers said was acting disorderly was sprayed with pepper spray and arrested, according to Aisha Johnson, a Roanoke Police Department spokeswoman. Information on charges was unavailable late Monday night.

The duo called New Boyz -- whose lead single "You're a Jerk" has raced up the Billboard ladder and sold thousands of copies on iTunes -- was booked from a national tour to Roanoke by WJJS-FM (Jammin' JJS) for a charity show benefiting Children's Miracle Network.

About 350 people packed Red Clay to fire code capacity for the 7 p.m. show, restaurant bouncer Shane Stager said. What appeared to be some 350 more fans who couldn't make it inside filled nearby streets. Some shouted, some laughed, and one boy in a red jacket danced in the middle of an intersection by hopping on the tips of his sneakers, crossing his legs at the ankle and swiveling his body groundward.

"It was 12-year-old madness," Stager said.

Twelve uniformed police officers were counted at the intersection of Salem Avenue and First Street about 9 p.m. Fans could be seen getting into the cars of parents over the following hour.
