Police identify suspect in August shooting

A search warrant filed Monday in Roanoke Circuit Court identified a suspect in the August slaying of Manuel Wilson.

Wilson, 31, was gunned down Aug. 11 as he walked along 11th Street Northwest.

Before he died, he told a friend that Jason Isaac Johnson had shot him, according to the search warrant.

Police are seeking DNA samples from Johnson to determine whether his DNA matches DNA on a piece of clothing found at the scene.

Johnson, 30, has not been charged.

After the shooting, officers searched Johnson's car and house in the 100 block of Gilmer Avenue Northwest. They found two boxes of 9 mm ammunition and two clear dishes with "off-white chunks," among other items, according to a search warrant return filed in August.

Johnson was on probation at the time of the search. He was convicted in 2003 of possessing cocaine with intent to distribute and served five years in prison, according to documents filed in U.S. District Court in Roanoke.

The findings from the search of his home and car led the U.S. Marshals Service to issue a warrant for his arrest for violating the conditions of his probation.

Johnson was arrested in Georgia in October and is being held at the Roanoke City Jail.
