Portion of Mill Lane in Salem to close during rail work
Editor's note: Mill Lane will be closed Nov. 30 through Dec. 2, officials said. The dates were incorrect in print, and have been fixed in this online version.
Part of Mill Lane in Salem will be closed for three days next week while nearby railroad repairs are made.
City spokesman Mike Stevens said Mill Lane (Virginia 636) will be closed between Tidewater and West Main streets on Monday, Nov. 30 through Wednesday, Dec. 2. It should reopen by Thursday, Dec. 3.
Mill Lane runs beside the city's water plant. Stevens said motorists should try to avoid the area and seek alternative routes until it reopens.
According to Norfolk Southern spokeswoman Susan Terpay, crews will be replacing about 2,000 feet of rail. Terpay said the company is upgrading rails in several locations between Roanoke and Blacksburg, but it was unclear whether this activity would lead to additional road closures.
