ROCKY MOUNT -- The man charged in the death of a Ferrum College student and the wounding of another remains out on bail. Jason David Cloutier, 31, of Ferrum returned to court Thursday morning after being released Wednesday on $20,000 bond.
He is charged with manslaughter, trespassing and reckless handling of a firearm.
During the short hearing, an assistant commonwealth's attorney appealed the bond, asking for a higher amount to be set. Cloutier's attorney, Will Davis, asked Circuit Court Judge William Alexander to deny the appeal because the prosecution didn't object to the bond amount during an arraignment Wednesday. After a review, Alexander agreed to let Cloutier remain out on the existing bond. Alexander also granted more time for both sides to research the law and will schedule another hearing if necessary.
Cloutier didn't speak during the hearing. His family accompanied him to court and offered hugs as he left the courtroom. Jessica Goode, a Ferrum College senior, was killed Tuesday by a rifle bullet and Regis Boudinot, a sophomore, was injured. A third student, who has not been identified, was with Goode and Boudinot but was not injured. The investigation of the Tuesday incident has focused on the Ferrum students being mistaken for deer while they were trekking through a wooded section near the campus on a class assignment.
