Body at Wasena bridge is ID'd; mom points to suicide
Police have identified the woman whose body was found Tuesday under a Roanoke bridge.
Jennifer Shantelle Adair, 30, of Roanoke was found under the Wasena bridge about 7:30 a.m. A crew on a Norfolk Southern coal train spotted her body near the train tracks and called police.
Her mother, Teresa Carter of Roanoke, said Wednesday night that Adair committed suicide by jumping off the bridge sometime late Monday or early Tuesday.
Police have not released Adair's cause of death, and the medical examiner's office also would not say how she died.
Carter said her daughter had struggled with a mental illness since she was 15 and that she had been diagnosed in 2005. She said Adair was released from a mental health institution earlier this month but would not specify the type of illness.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 33,300 people committed suicide in the United States in 2006. Of those, 876 were from Virginia. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline phone number is (800) 273-8255.
Adair is survived by three sons and two brothers, Carter said.
