The bodies of Heidi Childs, 18, of Forest and David Metzler, 19, of Lynchburg were found in a parking lot at the Caldwell Fields group campsite off Craig Creek Road early the morning of Aug. 27. Both had been shot, and investigators have said they were killed the evening before.
The van was seen parked in the same lot on Aug. 26, Lt. Dennis Rakes with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday. He said it is not being considered a suspect vehicle.
Investigators have asked that anyone who traveled Craig Creek Road in the 24 hours before Childs and Metzler were found call the sheriff’s office. However, no one who drives a silver or gray minivan has come forward, Lt. Brad Roop said in a news release.
The sheriff’s office is asking that the van’s operator come forward to speak with them. Also, anyone with information about someone who drives a similar vehicle and was believed to be on Craig Creek Road on or about the day of the killings is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (540) 382-2951.
A reward of more than $60,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case.
