Driver convicted of 2 counts of assault, battery

A count of attempted murder against the woman was dropped.

BEDFORD -- A Ridgeway woman accused of attempted murder after allegedly nearly running over someone with her vehicle was convicted Monday of two counts of assault and battery and still faces a felony charge.

The charge of attempted murder against Sandra Mikles, 40 -- which stemmed from an August scuffle in a Bedford County campground -- was dropped in county General District Court. Now, Mikles is instead set to stand trial on a felony charge of unlawful wounding.

On Monday, General District Judge Ed Burnette convicted Mikles of two misdemeanor counts of assault and battery and sentenced her to 12 months in jail for each of the convictions. However, he suspended both sentences in their entirety.

Those charges stem from an incident at the Eagle's Roost Camp Ground in Huddleston that Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney John Wheelock described as "basically a scrum over loud music." Mikles and another woman began fighting, and two teens Mikles was with got involved. Another man was struck in the face with a bottle. As Mikles drove off, she nearly ran over someone, according to the sheriff's office.

Before Monday's court hearing, she had already been convicted in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She was sentenced to 12 months in jail, but she has appealed the conviction to Circuit Court, where she is to be tried on the unlawful wounding charge.
