Hazmat leak from truck closes U.S. 11
The truck, parked at Lee-Hi Travel Plaza and hauling about 55,000 gallons of the solvent and gasoline additive toluene, began leaking about 10:30 p.m. Monday, according to Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Rob Carpentieri.
The truck stop was shut down by emergency crews, though no one was evacuated from the area, according to Rockbridge County Emergency Management Coordinator Robert Foresman.
State police closed both lanes of U.S. 11 near Grassy Ridge Lane until about 9 a.m. Tuesday. Foresman said this was not because of the leak itself but rather because fire crews had to stretch hoses across the road to access a hydrant.
Carpentieri said he was not aware of any charges that would be filed against the truck driver. Foresman said the company, Quality Carriers of Tampa, Fla., will be responsible for cost of the cleanup.
