Montgomery Co. standoff ends with arrest, no injuries

A Montgomery County man with a history of run-ins with the law was taken to jail Tuesday night after he held a relative hostage during a 90-minute standoff with sheriff's deputies, authorities said. No one was injured.

Eric N. Surface, 50, was charged with abduction and was being held without bond at the Montgomery County Regional Jail, said Lt. Norman Croy of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were called to the 3500 block of Glade Road, just west of the Blacksburg town limits, and were met by Surface wielding a firearm, Croy said. Authorities declined to release the identity of the relative who was held.

The emergency response and tactical team responded to the house and removed Surface without incident, Croy said.

Surface had been sentenced this month to serve eight days in jail for resisting arrest, online Montgomery County court records show.

He was also sentenced to three years of probation in December 2003 on charges of arson and assault and battery, according to court records.
