Business destroyed by fire on Monday

A Ferrum business was destroyed by fire Monday morning.

Underwood's Custom Kitchens near the intersection of Franklin Street and Skillet Road is deemed a total loss after the fire, which started in the attic, said county Fire Marshal Bennie Russell.

He said he will meet with insurance investigators today to try to determine the cause. The building was only 5 years old and an addition was added about a year ago, Russell said.

According to the business' Web site, Underwood's Custom Kitchens is owned and operated by county natives Jim and Darlene Underwood.

Firefighters from Ferrum, Rocky Mount, Boones Mill, Callaway and Henry County all responded to the fire, Russell said.

While fire companies battled the blaze, the westbound lane of Virginia 40 was closed but was later reopened.
