Grand jury gets 2 more months for deliberation

The special grand jury investigating the Franklin County Sheriff's Office will have another two months to deliberate.

County Circuit Court Judge William Alexander said Monday that he filed the order last week to give the group until Dec. 31 to investigate and report their findings.

Alexander ordered the assembly of the special grand jury May 8 to look into evidence management and employee compensation.

In April, state police traveled to Concord University in West Virginia where Ashley Hunt, Sheriff Ewell Hunt's daughter, was enrolled. Ashley Hunt used to work in the sheriff's office. According to a search warrant, investigators were looking into allegations that she was paid for hours she never worked.

Pittsylvania County Commonwealth's Attorney David Grimes is serving as special prosecutor.

Officials with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles are also conducting an audit of the sheriff's office, to see if grant money was misused.
