Fight-or-flight mode for a male deer translated into damaged property in downtown Roanoke on Friday evening.
At 5:30 p.m., a Roanoke police officer filed a report in front of a glass-littered sidewalk as he responded to a building in the 100 block of Campbell Avenue Southwest.
Officer R.J. Engl said from speaking to witnesses it appeared that the deer plowed through a portion of the building adjacent to First Street.
"From the looks of it, the deer jumped into the building, got pretty spooked and jumped back out," he said.
Engl said the deer apparently panicked while inside, crashed through another window on the Campbell Avenue side of the building, then avoided cars as it bolted southwest through oncoming traffic. Traces of blood were left on a window pane, glass fragments and portions of the pavement.
One of the owners of the building, Lew McClung of Salem, arrived while Engl was there. He said his father, co-owner of the building, received a call from police, then called him as he was heading home.
"He said, 'Get over there,' " McClung said.
He said the empty building isn't leased, adding that he would notify his insurance company and get the glass fixed.
Shortly after damaging the building, the deer was spotted inside a chain-link fence topped with barbed wire behind the Kazim Shrine Temple in the 600 block of Campbell Avenue Southwest, as city animal control officers tried to set it free, witnesses said.
Witnesses also said that as animal control and police officers surrounded the fence, the deer, seemingly panicked and disoriented, crashed into the barbed wire fence a few times before making his way out and dashing into a residential area on Marshall Avenue Southwest.
"He tore his underside up pretty good on the barbed wires -- a lot of blood and hair there," nearby resident Richard Willson said.
He said the trapped deer appeared to be "full-sized."
Willson said it was the first time he had seen such an encounter with wildlife in downtown Roanoke.
In 2007, police gave chase to a 140-pound black bear as it bounded through Northwest Roanoke. The bear ran loose for hours until it finally succumbed to the effects of animal control tranquilizer darts.
A city crew was sent to the scene of Friday's incident to clean up glass and secure the building as a portion of the street was closed off.
Friday night, police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson didn't have any further information about the incident or the fate of the deer.
