Bedford police: Woman arrested in death of infant
Police in Bedford arrested a woman Friday in connection with the 2008 death of her 8-month-old daughter.
Cecilia Leigh Burnette, 25, was charged with second-degree murder and felony child abuse, Bedford police Chief James Day said in a news release.
The infant, Marissa Burnette, was taken in early September 2008 from the 1100 block of Maiden Lane in Bedford to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, Bedford County Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Krantz said in late 2008.
"The autopsy report gives us the fact that the death was caused by a criminal act," Krantz said.
According to a Roanoke Times obituary published in September 2008, Burnette is Marissa's mother.
Burnette was being held without bond Friday at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail, Day said.
