Man charged after alleged sale of pit bulls in Bedford County
A North Carolina man faces a dogfighting charge in Bedford County after allegedly selling five pit bulls to undercover officers, according to the county sheriff's office.
William Travis Williams, 25, of Marshall, N.C., was arrested Saturday at the Best Western motel in Bedford after he received $6,500 for the dogs, the sheriff's office said in a written statement. The officers posed as dogfight "coordinators" during a two-month investigation.
Williams was charged with selling animals for the purpose of fighting with another animal, a felony. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The dogs were taken to the Bedford County Animal Shelter.
The sheriff's office said the investigation continues and more arrests are expected.
