Western Virginia agencies receive federal housing grants
Several agencies that fight homelessness in Western Virginia are receiving federal stimulus fund grants, Gov. Tim Kaine's office announced Wednesday.
Some 13 agencies in Virginia will receive a total of $11 million through the Homelessness and Rapid Re-Housing Program administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Roanoke-based Council of Community Services and New River Community Action each will receive $363,631. Combined, they serve a region stretching from Covington to Pulaski County.
Support to Eliminate Poverty, whose service area includes Franklin County, will receive $545,447, and Total Action Against Poverty in Rockbridge, Bath, Highland and Augusta counties will receive $666,657.
Families must be at or below 50 percent of their region's median income to be eligible. They also must be homeless or at risk of homelessness with no housing options.
