Man escapes jail time in animal cruelty case

A horse owner near Stewartsville who pleaded guilty Tuesday to 11 counts of animal cruelty will serve no time in jail.

Bedford County Circuit Court Judge James Updike sentenced Gary Chisom, 52, to six months in jail for each of the convictions but suspended all of the sentences.

Animal control deputies with the Bedford County Sheriff's Office seized 25 horses from Chisom in May after determining that the horses were not being given adequate food, space and shelter.

The horses were sent to different homes, though one later died, said Bedford County Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Wes Nance.

Chisom paid $10,000 in restitution, which covered the cost of the seizure and upkeep of the animals, Nance said.
