16-year-old indicted in shooting of Roanoke teen

A Roanoke grand jury has indicted a teenager in the June shooting death of a 15-year-old boy.

Marquise Terrel Daye, 16, now faces a charge of first-degree murder and a charge of using a firearm to commit murder, according to online court records. He will be tried as an adult.

Daye is accused of fatally shooting Gregory Grant on June 14 in the 500 block of Rutherford Avenue Northwest.

Grant, who was a ninth-grader at Patrick Henry High School, had lived in South Carolina before moving back to Roanoke in early April.

At Daye's arraignment in mid-June, Roanoke prosecutor Alice Ekirch said Daye told police that he had a confrontation with Grant and another person; he told investigators the pair had a gun, which misfired. The prosecutor said police found evidence of a single gun, the one used to shoot Grant.

Grant was shot in the back of the head, Ekirch said.

It was unclear Monday when Daye would be arraigned on the charges.
