ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. -- Defying the usual scheme of things, a man charged with murder stopped the police over the weekend.

Philip Kingery, sought since his wife's body was found on their property in Franklin County, Va., on July 17, walked up to St. Louis County police Officer Kyle Jahns about 9 a.m. Saturday at a QuikTrip store near Interstate 44 and Bowles Avenue.

Kingery asked whether Jahns was there in response to a 911 call he had just placed and said he wanted to surrender, according to department spokesman Rick Eckhard.

Jahns was unaware of the call, and asked why Kingery was turning himself in. The man said he was wanted for a homicide in Virginia.

Indeed, as Jahns handcuffed Kingery, a message came over the police radio about the 911 call, also warning that the suspect was considered armed and dangerous.

Eckhard said that Kingery was not carrying a gun. Eckhard did not know whether a weapon was in the suspect's truck nearby. It bore license plates stolen in Oklahoma, officials said, and was impounded for Virginia investigators.

Kingery, 48, was held at the St. Louis County jail in Clayton, pending extradition. He is charged with murder in the killing of Rose Kingery, 52, between July 13 and 17, Virginia State Police spokesman Rob Carpentieri said.
