Police charge man who had been shot in shoulder

A Bedford County man was charged with malicious wounding after he went to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

County sheriff's deputies were called to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital on Sunday afternoon for a report of a patient with a gunshot wound, according to Maj. Ricky Gardner. The shooting victim was Frederick Hancock, 33, of Hardy.

Gardner said investigators went to Hancock's home and spoke to his girlfriend, Jamie Klimaitis, 22. Klimaitis told deputies that Hancock had assaulted her the previous night. She said he later shot himself in the shoulder, Gardner said, and Klimaitis and Hancock's mother drove him to the hospital.

A hospital spokesman said he had no information on Hancock on Monday afternoon.

Hancock was arrested after the altercation and charged Monday and is being held without bond in the Blue Ridge Regional Jail, Gardner said. He said Klimaitis was treated for her injuries at Bedford Memorial Hospital and released.
