Camp Virginia Jaycee to reopen with past director at the helm
A Bedford County summer camp for people with disabilities will reopen later this month.
Camp Virginia Jaycee shut down in late June after a medical incident led to the firing of the camp director and a staffer.
Tom King, chairman of the camp's board of directors, declined to elaborate on the details of the incident but said the camp could not operate without executive leadership.
"We wish to assure everyone that the proper staff is in place to operate the camp safely and to offer a quality experience for our campers," King wrote in an e-mail.
Maile Armstrong, a county resident and past camp director, will serve as interim director when camp reopens July 26 for the final three weeks of the season. She also operates a camp consulting and training business.
The camp serves an average of 80 summer campers weekly and is open to individuals age 7 and older with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Armstrong said she was teaching a first aid and CPR course today to retrain the staff.
Lifeguard training to boost the staff from two lifeguards to six is scheduled for Saturday. And staff is telephoning all of the campers' families and trying to get them placed in upcoming sessions.
