Officers from the Roanoke Police Department's tactical response team apprehend a suspect after a three-hour standoff Friday morning in the 1400 block of Patterson Avenue in Roanoke. Police used a PepperBall gun to end the standoff; no one was injured.

The Roanoke Police Department's tactical response team used a PepperBall gun to end a three-hour standoff Friday with a man threatening to hurt himself, a spokeswoman said. No one was injured.

Police were called about 8:30 a.m. to a house in the 1400 block of Patterson Avenue Southwest for a report of a domestic dispute, said spokeswoman Aisha Johnson.

When officers arrived, they were told that a man was inside an apartment in the house, threatening to hurt himself. No one else was in the apartment with him, Johnson said.

Police evacuated other apartments in the house and closed the 1400 block of Patterson Avenue in the West End neighborhood to traffic.

The department's tactical response team made contact with the man, who Johnson said was armed with a knife. The man opened and shut the back door several times.

Officers tried to get the man to drop the knife and come out, but he didn't comply. Just before 11:30 a.m., police used a PepperBall gun to shoot at the man and the house, and the tactical team went inside. They came out moments later with the man in handcuffs.

He was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for an evaluation, Johnson said. His name has not been released.
