Police investigate connection between Salem robbery and Wythe Co. manhunt suspect

Salem police have taken out warrants against a man they believe held up a bank Monday and possibly committed robberies in Smyth County and in Tennessee.

Police are looking for Jason Bradley Davis, 29, according to a news release from the city. He is accused of robbing the BB&T bank in the 200 block of South College Avenue. His last known address was in Radford, but police said they believe he may now be transient.

Davis is charged with robbery and making a bomb threat because a note shown to the bank teller referred to an explosive device, the news release said.

Salem police still are investigating whether Monday's robbery is connected to a robbery last week at the StellarOne bank in the 1200 block of West Main Street.

Sgt. Mike Conroy of the Virginia State Police said Wednesday afternoon that authorities are investigating the possibility that Davis could also be the suspect in an ongoing manhunt in Wythe County.

Conroy said police spotted a truck linked to armed robberies in Smyth County and Tennessee on U.S. 11 near Rural Retreat about 4 a.m. Wednesday. The driver fled on foot and has not been sighted since.

The similarities in the language and writing of the note used in the Salem robbery and a robbery in Kingsport, Tenn., are what lead police to believe that Davis could be the culprit in both.

The suspect who fled is described as a white male, 5 feet 10 inches tall and 185 pounds, wearing black military-style clothing. He was carrying a black duffel bag and armed with a handgun.

Anyone with information about Davis' whereabouts is asked to call police at 375-3078 or 911. Police said he should be considered armed and dangerous.
