LEXINGTON -- Rape and sodomy charges against former Virginia Military Institute cadet Stephen J. Lloyd were certified to a grand jury Wednesday after a female cadet said he assaulted her in a campus storage room.
Rockbridge County General District Court Judge Gordon Saunders said there is probable cause that Lloyd, 21, of Mason Neck, raped the female cadet.
The incident marks the first time a male cadet has faced criminal charges of sexually assaulting a female classmate since VMI began admitting women in 1997.
Lloyd did not testify or enter a plea Wednesday. The grand jury will consider indicting him when it meets Monday.
Lloyd was a first-class cadet, which is the term the institute uses to identify senior class standing, in late March when the alleged incident occurred. VMI spokesman Lt. Col. Stewart MacInnis said Lloyd is no longer a cadet.
Lloyd and the alleged victim shared a previous sexual relationship that ended months before the incident, according to testimony from the woman Wednesday.
The Roanoke Times does not identify victims of alleged sexual assaults.
The woman, during her testimony, described the evening of March 27 this way:
She said she had been drinking a mixture of rum and tequila with another cadet on campus, something that violates the institute's policies.
The woman said she stopped drinking, went to her room in the barracks and fell asleep about 10:30 p.m.
She testified that Lloyd entered her room and woke her shortly after midnight March 28. The doors to the rooms in the barracks do not have locks on them, she said.
The two went together to an outdoor smoking area. On the way back to her room, Lloyd pulled her by the wrist into an unlocked storage room, where the woman said Lloyd raped her multiple times, then forced her into performing an oral sex act on him.
The lock on the door to the storage room -- used to hold trunks, luggage and cadets' other personal belongings -- was broken, she said.
The woman repeatedly told Lloyd no and asked him to stop, she said.
She returned to her room about 1:30 a.m. and cried herself to sleep, she said. Later that morning, after confiding to a friend and fellow cadet, the woman went to the school's infirmary and the assault ultimately was reported to police.
Lloyd was arrested March 31 and held in Rockbridge Regional Jail until he was released on bond three days later. The woman, 20, is a rising first-class cadet. She said Wednesday she plans to return to VMI this fall to complete her education.
