Two taken to hospital after apartment fire
Careless smoking was the cause of an apartment fire Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
Roanoke fire crews responded to the fire in the 400 block of Riverland Road Southeast at 3:10 p.m. The fire was brought under control in about 15 minutes. Two people were in the apartment when the fire broke out, and at least one was using medical oxygen.
The two occupants were on the front porch when crews arrived. Both were taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Their conditions were unknown Thursday evening.
Roanoke Fire-EMS spokeswoman Tiffany Bradbury said damage estimates were unavailable, but said they appeared "very minimal."
