Roanoke County driver hospitalized after crash on Blue Ridge Parkway
Roanoke County police are investigating a one-car crash on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Vinton that seriously injured the driver.
An officer was driving south on the parkway about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday near mile marker 111 when a northbound Honda Civic passed him at a high speed, Sgt. Tim Wyatt said.
The officer stopped his cruiser and turned around. As he was coming out of a curve near mile marker 109, he saw the Honda in the middle of the road, Wyatt said.
The officer ran his cruiser off the road to avoid striking the vehicle and hit a ditch. He was not injured, Wyatt said.
The Honda apparently had run off the road, hit an embankment and rolled over, coming to rest back on the road, Wyatt said.
The driver, who had been ejected from the vehicle, was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injures. His name has not been released, but police said he is 21 years old and lives in Blue Ridge.
No one has been charged.
