A Blue Ridge man was sentenced to 100 years in prison Tuesday for raping an 8-year-old girl, according to Bedford County Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Krantz.

Christopher M. Shepperd, 36, received 50 years each for two counts of forcible rape of a child. No time was suspended.

Judge James Updike stated in his ruling Tuesday this was one of the most egregious cases he has seen in his more than three decades of service, Krantz said.

"The evidence established that the victim was not only chronically sexually abused by the defendant, but was in effect sexually used by the defendant for his own pleasure," Krantz said.

Shepperd pleaded guilty in April to the crimes.

The girl is a relative of Shepperd's and was so badly injured after the October rapes that she had to be taken to a doctor, based on what the sheriff's office learned as it started its investigation. The Roanoke Times does not name victims of sexual assaults.
