Infant killed in crash along U.S. 11 in Troutville

A single-vehicle wreck Monday night in Troutville took the life of a 2-week-old child, according to Virginia State Police.

Spokesman Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said the crash happened after 7 p.m. on U.S. 11. He said a 1995 Subaru Forester was northbound when it went off the left side of the road and hit an embankment about a mile north of Virginia 640.

One of the passengers, Abbagayle Blankenship, who was 14 days old, was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and died a short time later, Carpentieri said.

He said the driver, Denna Blankenship, 18, of Buchanan also was taken to Roanoke Memorial along with her twin sister, Dana Blankenship, and a 10-month-old child. A fifth passenger was treated but did not require hospitalization.

Denna and Dana Blankenship were listed in good condition Tuesday afternoon, according to hospital spokesman Eric Earnhart. The condition of the injured child has not been released.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said lanes of U.S. 11 were closed following the accident until about 10 p.m.
