Morning fire destroys house; no one hurt

A fire Tuesday morning caused extensive damage to a Rocky Mount house, but no one was injured.

Firefighters were called to the house on Donald Avenue about 7:20 a.m., said Franklin County Fire Marshal Bennie Russell. When crews arrived, they saw smoke and flames coming from the one-story brick house, Russell said.

One person was at the house when the fire started and told investigators that he heard a small explosion, Rocky Mount Fire Chief Posey Dillon said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated. The house is a total loss, Dillon said.

The resident, who rented the house, is being helped by the American Red Cross.
