Woman sentenced in embezzlement scheme
A former Lee County bank employee was sentenced to 41 months in prison this week for embezzling $487,685 from her employer.
Rebecca Dawn Long of Jonesville, who was 35 when she pleaded guilty in January to five federal charges, worked at The Peoples Bank. In 2004, she set up a line of credit under a false name there, prosecutors said. Over the next four years, she withdrew money, then attempted to conceal the transactions with a false loan document.
Long was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Big Stone Gap for bank embezzlement, bank fraud, money laundering, making a false statement on a loan document and engaging in a transaction involving criminally derived property worth more than $10,000.
In addition to imposing a prison sentence, Chief U.S. District Court Judge James Jones ordered Long to repay the bank.
