Officials say injury, fire caused by smoking
Firefighters took one person to a hospital after someone smoking in bed started a fire in a Southwest Roanoke apartment Saturday evening, officials said.
The person was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with injuries related to smoke inhalation, the Roanoke Fire-EMS Department said in a news release. The person's identity and condition were not released.
Crews responded about 6 p.m. to the fire in the 1100 block of Chapman Avenue, off Campbell Avenue, and found a mattress on fire in an apartment, the release said. The fire was extinguished in less than 10 minutes.
Damage was estimated at about $500.
